Moderna has announced that its COVID-19 vaccine is 94.5% effective. On the back of the news, Moderna shares gained 20%. Earlier, Pfizer announced an efficiency of 90% based on preliminary figures. As noted in Moderna, its vaccine does not require extreme storage conditions – minus 70 degrees and below.
This will simplify the process of transportation and storage of the drug – the required temperature is minus 4 degrees.
It is reported that more than 30 thousand volunteers took part in the third phase of trials of the Moderna vaccine, including people over 65 – these are at a special risk zone, as well as representatives of different races. As a result, 95 subjects became infected, 90 were in the group in which the placebo was offered, 5 out of 95 suffered COVID-19 in a mild form.
The report notes that the vaccine carries no significant health risks and is well tolerated by recipients. Until the end of the year in the USA planned to produce 20 million doses of vaccine. Next year, between 500 million and 1 billion doses will be produced for the international market.
Moderna and Pfizer use similar vaccine technologies and are based on messenger RNA.
