The joint development of a coronavirus vaccine by the American company BioNTech and the German Pfizer has shown good results in clinical trials. Those vaccinated with the BNT162b2 vaccine have a 90% lower risk of contracting COVID-19. This figure appears in a joint statement by the corporations. Amid good news, shares of the largest Internet companies began to fall.
In the third phase of clinical trials of the BNT162b2 vaccine, 43,538 patients participated. No serious side effects have been identified. As early as next week, the companies plan to apply for a vaccine registration in the United States under an accelerated scheme.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she wants to sign a contract for the purchase of 300 million doses of the drug. However, as the head of the German Ministry of Health Jens Spahn noted, one should not harbor false illusions: the drug will be ready for mass vaccination only in the first quarter of 2021.
On the back of the news, the Zoom founder lost $ 5 billion as the company’s shares fell significantly by more than 17%. Thus, the exchange markets expressed hope for an early end to the pandemic. At the same time, Pfizer and BioNTech shares went up, as did the main stock indices in general. Among the losers are Netflix (minus 8.59% of the share price), Amazon (minus 5.06%), Facebook (minus 4.99%), FedEx (minus 5.68%).
