Google Photos will disable endless photo storage

From June 1, 2021, users of the cloud-based photo storage service Google Photos will lose the ability to store an unlimited number of images in a compressed form by the service’s algorithms. This was officially announced by Google. She promises that the pictures uploaded before this date will not be affected.

That is, all photos uploaded by the user after June 1, 2021 will be taken into account. The indulgence will remain for owners of Google Pixel smartphones. Unlimited storage of compressed images will still be available to them.

Free storage has been available since 2015. Google algorithms, at the request of the user, changed the quality of uploaded photos, reducing their size, but not significantly degrading the quality of the images.

The company said that more than four trillion images are stored on Google Photos servers. Each week, their number increases by 28 billion photos.
