Many politicians, researchers and experts hope that the arrival of a hot summer will have a positive effect on the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. But a study by Canadian scientists at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Health Policy shows that temperature and latitude are not related to the spread of COVID-19. The study is published in the peer-reviewed Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Temperature and latitude were not critical to the rate of infection. But the closure of schools and other measures to protect public health were much more important.
“Our study provides important new evidence, using the global data from the COVID-19 epidemic, that these public health measures have slowed the growth of the epidemic,” quotes Eureka Alert by Dr. Peter Uni, lead author of the study.
The sample of scientists included 144 geopolitical zones both in the USA, Australia, Canada, and in other parts of the world. A total of 375,600 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were analyzed. No relationship was found between temperature, latitude and humidity. Hotter weather did not affect the development of the epidemic. What even the authors of the study were surprised at, although their preliminary calculations showed a possible connection.
– When we repeated the study under much more stringent conditions, we got the opposite result.
The closures of schools, the social distance of people, and the ban on mass events were effective.
“Our results are directly relevant, as many countries, as well as some Canadian provinces and territories, are considering mitigating or eliminating some of these public health measures.” Summer will not make the virus go away. It is important that people know this.
